Winter Walking Tour: Those Who Made the Winter

General Public Tours | Group Tours

The Forks - Winnipeg, Manitoba

Experience winter at The Forks through an immersive Indigenous-guided walking tour rooted in community, survival teachings, and the stories that shaped how our people endured the coldest months. Winter was understood as a season of preparation, protection, and connection — a time when families and Nations relied on one another to make it through.

  • How our communities made the winter through preparation, storage, and shared responsibilities

  • Winter as a cultural season for rest, reflection, storytelling, and strengthening relationships

  • The roles of family and community — how tasks shifted and how everyone contributed to survival

  • Knowledge of winter movement and the land: reading ice, navigating trails, understanding weather, and travelling safely

  • Teachings of resilience and reciprocity — honouring the land and each other during the harshest part of the year

  • Stories passed down about those who carried the winter for us: protectors, knowledge keepers, and families who sustained entire communities
